5 things that Catholics should not forget in their Will and Estate Plan 📜
(Not fun to think about, but necessary)
🟢 Catholic Funeral Mass- This should be laid out in your Will along with any details about the mass. This ensures that the family you leave behind will honor your wishes, even if they themselves have drifted away from the faith.
🟢 Burial- The church “earnestly recommends” that Catholics bury the dead in a sacred place. According to the 1983 code of canon law, cremations are not forbidden, however, they need to be done correctly to be in line with church teachings. Consult your priest if this is something you are considering.
🟢 Remember the Church- Ultimately, God owns all we have, please remember to give some of your estate to support the church and continue the work here on earth after you are gone.
🟢 Taking care of family- Name a guardian for your minor children. If you don't, the state will decide who takes care of them after your death.
🟢 Healthcare directive/Proxy/POA- Name someone to make medical decisions on your behalf who you trust to make decisions that are reasonable and proportionate to the situation.
Remember, we all die at some point. It is prudent to have a plan in place for something we know will happen, we just don't know when. Review and update your estate plans over time, as needed. Memento Mori.
*Please note this is not legal or spiritual advice. Consult a lawyer to ensure your estate plan makes sense for your situation and consult a priest to ensure you receive the proper spiritual care at the end of your life.
